I was surprised, on first hearing Ogdon's own music (the 1st Piano Concerto, to be precise), how comparatively conservative, even Neoclassical, it was, given the man's association with the then-screamingly-<i>avant-garde</i> "Manchester School" (Birtwistle, "Max", Goehr, <i>et al.</i>) and with such "out there" extremists as Sorabji.
